What to expect on your first visit
On your first visit to see us, we will schedule quality time to get acquainted with Dr. Schafermeyer. He will review your medical and dental history, conduct a thorough oral exam, and discuss your concerns while providing recommendations for treatment as necessary. We will take time to listen to you and understand your expectations or fears, and make sure that you are fully informed. Rest assured, we will give you honest answers and not try to sell you unnecessary procedures.
Your first visit will establish the foundation for our relationship, so we will need to get important background information regarding your medical and dental history. The forms will be provided in the office.
You can bring us your x-rays taken from another office and we’ll gladly review them with you. However, we may need to take new x-rays in order to give us a more current view on your oral health and provide an accurate diagnosis to plan the best treatment possible as needed.
While in the chair, we may then use our intra-oral camera to take photos of your teeth as this device allows us to take a 40x magnified image, helping us to show you a detailed view of your current oral health status.
After the examination, we will then form a comprehensive treatment plan for you as needed, discuss it with you, and answer any questions that you may have. Our goal is to provide long-lasting solutions to leave your mouth looking and feeling as good as new. Often times, this involves preventing problems before they occur. We may also set up an appointment with our hygienist for a professional cleaning or and/or periodontal services for the first phase of treatment.
Fear of the dentist
If you have any anxiety about visiting the dentist, you are not alone. It is estimated that more than 80% of adult Americans have some fear of going to the dentist. Often, these fears are caused by traumatic childhood experiences. Fear of pain and fear of the unknown also contribute to dental anxiety and cause many people to put off or avoid dental treatment altogether, which then leads to bigger dental issues down the road.
At Kaua’i Sparkles Dental Care, we understand that each person’s experiences, fears and phobias are unique, so we take the time with each individual to understand their needs, anxieties and goals. We treat every patient with the utmost respect and will spend as much time as needed to help with your dental fears.
We want to build a relationship with our patients based on trust, and that entails getting to know each and every patient. By understanding your feelings, we can cater to each individuals needs and goals to give the best dental care possible with the least amount of stress. We will never rush your treatment.
To help alleviate fear of the unknown, we ensure each patient understands what treatments are being recommended along with their associated benefits and potential risks. We don’t want anyone to feel like they are being “talked down to” and will always answer any questions that you may have.
Our gentle approach will help your experience to be as comfortable as possible. We can generally talk you through most dental procedures, but can also offer nitrous oxide gas for those who desire it.
Our practice is always here for you in case of an emergency. Call as early as you can and we’ll do our best to see you that very same day.
